Kang chest were placed on heated, elevated platforms and used for storage and for serving food. At night Kang platforms became beds. This Kang chest is unusually original in every detail. The oxblood lacquer finish is beautifully mottled andaged. Oxblood is one of the three traditional Chinese lacquer colors. Red and black lacquer are fully opaque. Oxblood lacquer is translucent and displays the beautiful wood grain below. Oxblood lacquer is made from actual ox blood dissolved into natural tree sap lacquer. The oxblood lacquer on this chest is very dark due to accumulated soot and grime, now embedded in the finish.In addition to its beautiful finish, the chest features traditional mortise and tenon joinery. This is an exceptionally well preserved and sturdy antique. The brass hardware is also original to the piece.
